FIPA Specifications voted to Standard Status

This is very good news. The FIPA agent stack is very similar to webservices at the plumbing level (indeed I'd expect any future FIPA system could run on top of SOAP/WSDL).

Aside from objections from the REST side of the house, much of the limitations of webservices, I believe can be traced back to an absence of a content model for message exchange and not having a good story on service discovery/introspection. The FIPA standards address those issues head on, and should fit snugly on top of webservices plumbing. That suggests they'll be of more immediate use and appeal than the semantic web technologies, assuming the webservices community are prepared to absorb them.
