WriteRoom is the un-Emacs. Or un-Vim, or un-OpenOffice, or un-TextMate. It's worse than all of them, which is exactly why it's better than all of them for just writing.

Take a look @ Archie, originally developed by the late Jef Raskin (of Macintosh fame) - http://rchi.raskincenter.org/

It's developed in Python, and is now open source. Its been some time since the last release, (Dec. 2005), though my guess is that with the proper encouragement, that could change quickly.
